Based on the Sport trim, the Cherokee Predator gains privacy glass and is priced at £15,990. Standard equipment includes 16-inch steel wheels, air-conditioning and a single CD player. Power comes from a 2.4-litre petrol engine.The larger Grand Cherokee Predator is based on the Limited model, and also gets privacy glass as part of the special edition trim. It has been priced at £29,990 and comes with rear parking sensors, leather-trimmed seats and steering wheel, heated seats with memory function and tyre pressure monitors. Andy Enright reportsAt the risk of betraying some rather low-brow credentials, I must admit to thoroughly enjoying Predator, the action movie starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. The sequel stank but the original was charged with atmosphere, was tightly cast and scripted and had one of the greatest bad guys in modern cinema in El cazador trofeo de los hombres - the demon who makes trophies of men. The only problem is that the movie was made in 1987. If it had been made today, Arnie and his muscle-bound cronies wouldnt have had to rely on a clattering helicopter. They could have used stealth and taken the baddie by surprise by rolling up in a Grand Cherokee Predator. Build Comfort Depreciation Economy Equipment Handling Insurance Performance Styling Value Okay, so they might have had a wee problem getting the full assault team and a minigun on board but at least the Governator would have been comfortably ensconced in an eight-way electrically powered driving seat. Priced at £26,490, the Predator marks the entry point to a revised Grand Cherokee line-up and is reasonably well appointed. As well as 17-inch Orbitek alloy wheels, this model also comes fitted with front fog lamps, heated and powered folding door mirrors, air-conditioning, electric windows all round and a tyre pressure warning system. From here its quite a big step up in price to the £30,035 Limited model which throws leather, a premium stereo system, dual zone air-conditioning and parking assist into the pot. "The Predator is a better vehicle than its frankly stunted price would ever suggest"Although the Predators fascia may contain its fair share of switch blanks, youre getting an awful lot of car for the money. The 218bhp turbodiesel engine is one of the best installations around and at that price its churlish to grouse. What really puts the Jeeps value proposition into sharp focus is that fact that a Toyota RAV4 with a petrol engine thats still 38bhp shy of what the Predator serves up retails for around £500 more. A closer comparison is Land Rovers entry-level Freelander but this is still 25bhp short of the Jeeps power output, weighs a whole lot more, comes with less gear and yet costs another £500. It doesnt take a genius to figure out why Jeep are so confident about this models chances. The Predators ace in the hole is that Mercedes-sourced common-rail diesel engine. Put simply, its the best diesel engine in its class and not a whole lot even comes close. Sixty from rest takes 9. 0 seconds (3.5 seconds quicker than a Land Rover Discovery) on the way to a top speed of 124mph (15mph quicker). Only when it comes to fuel economy does the Land Rover product make up some lost ground, on average, returning around 3 miles more for every tank. Given the up-front price differential however, you can forgive the Jeep a little on this score. Forgive the endless comparisons with the Solihull product but Land Rover and Jeep really are the class of the field in the £30,000 sector of the current luxury 4x4 market. We recently marked out the Discovery as our 4x4 of the Year but that was based on its off-road ability an area the Jeep doesnt quite match but gets close enough for the difference not to matter. Many buyers of this third generation Grand will be stepping into the car straight from a MK2 model. Theyll notice a huge difference. The old recirculating ball steering system has been replaced by a rack and pinion set-up and the difference is night and day. Where the old car required constant corrections to keep on the straight and narrow, the latest feels resolutely car-like, with decent feedback. Its still not what youd describe as sporty, but it at least feels as if its now attached to a car rather than a boat. Hand in hand with the changes to the steering has gone a root and branch revision of the suspension system. Independent front suspension has helped the on-road ride and also pays dividends off-road, increasing wheel articulation and ensuring that the tyres sit squarely on the ground when the suspension is extended. Improved safety systems also feature, with stability control being fitted for the first time. This works in concert with the electronic rollover mitigation system that anticipates critical situations for the vehicle that may lead to a rollover scenario, nipping at the brakes and reducing engine torque to keep this high-sided 4x4 dirty side down. On the road, the Grand Cherokees common-rail diesel engine fires up with encouraging civility and only becomes vocal when fully extended. The midrange torque is predictably excellent, peaking at 376lb/ft, it makes towing heavy loads no problem at all. It also renders crawling through tricky off-road sections at little more than idle simplicity itself. The same unit is used in the latest Mercedes M-class but youll pay a lot more for it under the bonnet of a car bearing the three-pointed star. This Jeep is capable off-road as well as on it. A trick Quadra-Drive all-wheel drive system uses three limited-slip differentials to direct drive in tricky off-road situations. In fact, this vehicle can extricate itself from said sticky situation when only one front wheel has traction. The underside of the car is reassuringly flat, Jeep tucking the exhaust plus the centre and front differentials well out of harms way, even utilising the rear crash protection beams as skid sections. The front air dam is even readily removable for tough off road duty. Although Jeep wont guarantee its efficacy against semi-transparent aliens, they seem pretty sure of its ability to face down invaders from Solihull. Andy Enright ReportsTraction. When it comes to off roading youve either got it or you havent and thanks to Jeeps Quadra Drive system fitted to their Commander we had it. Lots of it. Clambering up a rocky wadi on a part of the map just marked Sand and Gravel wasnt a place youd relish getting stuck but the big Jeep was making mincemeat of sand, gravel, rocks and anything else placed in its path. Its party trick was that clever Quadra Drive transmission.Older Jeeps campaigned with a system called Quadra Trac which could detect when either the front or rear wheels were slipping and could divert drive to the other end of the car. It was a rugged, effective system but the latest Commander 3.0-litre CRD features the next development. Quadra Drive not only shifts torque from the front to the rear axles and vice versa but because each axle is fitted with a clever electronic differential, it can direct drive to whichever wheel can best deploy traction. This means that even if three tyres are spinning uselessly in soft sand and one can get a purchase on rock, Quadra Drive will ensure that the Jeep will crawl out. Its hugely impressive. As is the engine fitted to both Commander variants including the entry-level £27,490 Predator model were looking at here. The 3. 0-litre CRD diesel powerplant pops up all over the Chrysler, Jeep and Mercedes-Benz Ranges and with good reason. Its one of the most impressive diesel engines money can buy. Its 218bhp output is capable of making a Mercedes C-Class feel indecently quick but when tasked with hauling the rather weightier Commander body about, it instead relies on its 510Nm of torque. This is more than even the Commanders Range-topping V8 Hemi engine can manage. "The Commander 3.0CRD features one of the finest diesel engines in series production"On the road it equates to a sprint to 60mph in 8.7 seconds and a top speed of 120mph. Economy is very respectable at 30.9mpg and emissions are rated at 284g/km. When it comes to serious off-roading, this is probably the engine to plump for. The Commander may be able to tackle the wadis and dunes of our Omani test route with ease but the truth remains that most UK buyers wont expose their vehicle to anything like this and will instead rely on the cars other assets. Chief among these is the seven seat layout - a first for Jeep and a necessity given that the Land Rover Discovery and many other rivals now boasts a septet of chairs. Space in the first two rows of seats is good, although those with longer legs wont relish a lengthy spell in the back pair. Kneeroom may not be great in the back but the view out is. Jeep have stepped each row of seats so that the second row is 11.7cm higher than the front and the third row seats are another 12cm higher than the second. This means that everybody in the car gets a decent view and children seated in the very back can be easily monitored. The second row of seats splits 40/20/40 and the outer sections can fold down then tumble forwards to allow passengers in the back easy access from either side. Theres even a separate air-conditioning system for third row occupants. Squeeze seven passengers on board and youd better hope theyve packed light because thatll leave a mere 6 cubic feet of luggage space available. Seat five, fold the rearmost pair of seats down and youll have a more satisfactory 36. 3 cubic feet. Drop the middle row as well and youll have a massive 67.4 cubic feet of available space. The military surPlus styling of the Commander takes a little getting used to. With its tacked on wheelarches and heavy duty scuff plates, it looks like something that should be touring Fallujah looking for insurgents rather than collecting the kids from school. It is, therefore, perfect for the burgeoning quantity of buyers who prefer a little presence to get ahead in the traffic. Jeep dont expect to sell too many, importing just 600 cars to the UK, so theres set to be a measure of exclusivity to boot. The beefy five-link solid rear axle combines with an independent short-and-long-arm front suspension which Jeep have designed to give ride and steering feel thats better than the class average. The rack and pinion steering system is a revelation if youve only ever driven a previous generation Grand Cherokee model. In short, it turns the Commander from a bit of a lumberer into something a whole lot sharper and the vehicle benefits hugely from its inclusion. Like all Jeep products, this means that theres not a great deal of roll when cornering hard. Get a little too enthusiastic with the cornering and youll be grateful for the standard fit electronic stability control, antilock brakes with BrakeAssist and side curtain airbags that cover all three rows. The Commander 3.0CRD is a far better vehicle than many will ever realise. The sad fact is that a decent proportion of buyers will be deterred by the bloodhound front end and never realise what lies beneath. At the vehicles launch, senior Jeep executives were notably defensive about the styling. They claimed that this heritage design was in response to customer demand. Maybe that demand doesnt travel so well this side of the Atlantic, because as much as such a well-engineered vehicle deserves success, its very hard to see the Commander 3.0-litre CRD putting a sizeable dent in Discovery sales. America leads the way in cosmetic surgery.
