Steve Walker takes a lookJeeps Grand Cherokee uses the advanced Quadra-Drive II active four-wheel drive system and features no less than three electronic limited-slip differentials. Its also the first vehicle on the market with an electronically-engaging torque bias front axle. The question is how much use will any of this be to the majority of buyers who would never dream of taking their pride and joy offroad? Theyll be far more interested in impressing pedestrians and cutting a dash on their local high street and thats where the Grand Cherokee Overland model comes in.Jump back to the late nineties and the Grand Cherokee was a luxury 4x4. Buyers wanting the Plushest offroad vehicle they could lay their hands on either bought the big Jeep or a MKII Range Rover. Today, the market has changed unrecognisably. In the current climate, no prestige manufacturers model Range is complete without a large and luxurious mud-plugger. Build Comfort Depreciation Economy Equipment Handling Insurance Performance Styling Value Mercedes, BMW, Lexus, Porsche and Audi have all muscled in on what was once Jeeps territory. Thats not to say that the American marque is giving up without a fight. The current Grand Cherokee may be more in line with family 4x4s and sports utility vehicles price-wise but in Range-topping Overland form, it can still challenge for sales in its old stomping ground. The Overland weighs in with a series of extras designed to pep-up the Grand Cherokees outward appearance. Its already an attractive vehicle, or at least as attractive as big offroaders tend to get. The Overland just subtly raises the tone with platinum detailing for the grille, mirror housings, roof rails, window trim and 18" seven spoke alloys. Thats a lot of platinum but it does give the Grand Cherokee Overland a classier edge. Inside, theres less platinum but more wood and leather. Jeep are keen to point out that the material on the steering wheel, centre console and door bezels is real wood too, none of your mahogany-effect plastic here. Leather adorns the gear and handbrake levers as well as the centre armrest. It also crops up on the door panels and the satellite navigation surround. Naturally, its on the seats too and the front ones feature the Overland logo on their backs - just to remind your rear passengers which Grand Cherokee theyve been lucky enough to wangle a lift in."The Overland weighs in with a series of extras designed to pep-up the Grand Cherokees outward appearance"Only one engine option is now offered with Overland trim, the 3.0-litre V6 CRD diesel that the vast majority of Jeep buyers in this country will want. The 3.0-litre CRD is a strong unit with 215bhp and a 376lb/ft torque rating. Its economical, with a 27.7mpg average, and it has a decent turn of pace (0-60mph takes 9 seconds) but most importantly its smooth and flexible. The current Grand Cherokee is a world away from its predecessor when it comes to handling. The steering is far sharper with a rack and pinion set-up introduced to replace the old recirculating ball. This is a substantial 4x4 vehicle that tips the scales at 2,310kg but body roll is less pronounced than youd expect and the ride is nicely composed. The maximum towing weight for all models is a substantial 3,360kg, so the Grand Cherokee is quite at home living up to its sports utility vehicle billing with a quad bike, a speed boat or even a 6-berth caravan hitched onto the back. All Grand Cherokee models feature ABS brakes with traction control and Jeeps Electronic Stability Programme. Then theres the electronic rollover mitigation system which monitors driver inputs and the vehicles behaviour to spot potential rollover situations. It can then reduce engine torque or apply bursts of hard braking to avert disaster. Should the unthinkable happen, multi-stage front airbags and curtain airbags along with seatbelt pre-tensioners are on hand to help. With an equipment list featuring highlights such as satellite navigation, a six CD autochanger, parking sensors and a powered sunroof, in addition to the styling and interior upgrades, Overland trim makes the Grand Cherokee feel like a luxurious 4x4. The price, however, is significantly less prohibitive than youd expect from most luxury 4x4 products. Buyers pay £33,990 for this variants 3.0-litre V6 CRD diesel engine but youll need well over £4,000 more to secure an equivalently-equipped BMW X5 3.0d. Of course, the Jeep cant offer the badge kudos or the same inherent quality that these top-end 4x4s can but the Overland trim level masks its relatively minor shortcomings very well and some buyers will doubtless be persuaded. When pitted against models more of its own ilk, the Grand Cherokee is highly competitive on equipment levels and comfort but falls down a touch on interior space and practicality. Whereas the likes of Land Rovers Discovery and Volvos XC90 incorporate MPV-style family-orientated features and offer 7-seat options, the Grand Cherokee doesnt. In Plush Overland form, it sits somewhere between the luxury and family 4x4 sectors with the up-market feel of the former and pricing from the later. Its a combination that deserves to achieve popularity. But to many, flimsy reliability and flaky interiors spring to mind.Having recently split from partner company Daimler, Jeep’s parent firm Chrysler is setting about boosting the premium feel of all its flagship models. In Issue 1,003, we were impressed by the company’s facelifted 300C, and Jeep designers have pulled a similar trick with the Grand Cherokee.On sale in the UK now, the 4x4 has received several tweaks to keep it competitive in a tough market, but have the changes gone far enough?From the front, it will take a keen eye to spot the differences. The biggest modification has been made to the shape of the headlamps – the twin bubble at the top of the lights is now reflected at the bottom. The trademark Jeep grille has also been altered to help emphasise the Grand Cherokee’s muscular looks.StylishWith the same shallow glass area and relatively low roof, the biggest 4x4 in the Jeep range is still a stylish mud-plugger, but it’s inside that it has always trailed Land Rover rivals.The first thing that’s obvious when climbing in is that the new model is no more practical than its predecessor. That means little more space than you will find in a family hatchback.What designers have managed to do is to give the Jeep a more upmarket feel. Light-coloured plastics on the dash and fake-looking wood have been replaced by darker trim and black surfaces. Much of the switchgear is still lacking in quality, but the overall ambiance has improved.It’s a shame engineers weren’t able to give the Grand Cherokee a similar makeover under the skin. With no mechanical changes, the Jeep will still struggle to match the dynamic abilities of many rivals.Despite impressing off-road, it can’t match the Land Rover Discovery for ride quality, but at least the six-cylinder engine offers strong performance and superb refinement.The Grand Cherokee is available from a competitive £26,995 in base trim, while the luxurious Overland model pictured here weighs in at £35,595, yet comes with everything from xenon lamps to a reversing camera. We liked it even before our daughter was born! We tried it out at the store and even though it's big it's a comfortable ride. PROS: I like the style. Love the five harness strap. Great reclining position although my one-year-old isn't interested in this feature. Love the adjustable handle to keep my jogging/running form. Enjoy the 16" bicycle tires which make it fun for my daughter to go over bumps, ruts and pot holes with little disturbance. Great shocks! Wonderful storage below that's easy to access. Like that it's a front locked tire since I only use this jogger for jogging. I don't take it to the mall or for shopping -- just out on the trail. Love all the extra storage with the side pockets and pockets near the handle. Great hand brake and very useful for the downhill terrain. Wonderful foot brake, easy to use and keeps the stroller in place. I don't use the music player I keep my wallet, cell phone and keys in that compartment. Easy to lock. CONS: A little on the heavy side. I'm able to put it in the back of our truck and bring it up and down our front steps, but it's definitely not a lightweight stroller. Canvas doesn't extend far enough out to keep the sun out of my daughter's eyes, but I do have her wear a wide brim hat. Folds up relatively easily but it's not all that small. It does take up space even when folded but this isn't a huge problem for us. This is strictly a jogging stroller and not a stroller for around town. It's too big and is difficult to maneuver in small spaces. Having said that I have no trouble with it on the trail and control it with one hand for the most part. Overall I'm pleased with this stroller. My daughter is safe and comfortable inside and she often sleeps halfway through my morning jogs even when I do go over bumpy terrain. I think it was a great purchase for our money. We bought it at the first of the year and it was on sale so that was a good thing budget-wise for us. I'm very satisfied with the Jeep Overland jogger. It has always traveled straight on course for us. -Adjustable canopy: the shade is fantastic and a must have. It can be unzipped and detached for additional coverage. It sometimes collapses on its own while running, but you can fix that problem by unzipping it. -Parent tray: great for its musical abilities. You can play music while running, but the parent tray only holds 2 small bottles and weighs about 2 lbs by itself so we don't use it. -Pedometer: great and useful, but unfortunately it does not come with a time or a clock. -Seat and straps: nicely padded and my 3 month old seems quite comfortable and they all wipe off very easily. It is very easy to recline the seat when he falls asleep without waking him up. It's a smooth transition from sitting to lying down. -Storage space: there are all sorts of storage spaces and the mesh bag by the handles it great to hold my cell phone, water bottle and keys. -Wheels: good size and easily removable. The pump that comes with the stroller isn't great, but it is just enough if I need a quick fill up when I am out. -Fixed front wheel: stable and perfect for running as it should be on a jogger. It took us little time to learn steering the jogger. -Ride & breaking system are great. -Weight: lighter than other joggers (after doing some research online) -Length: this stroller is not super long like some of the Schwinn joggers can be -Consumer Reports: this stroller is one of the top rated and has great reviews. CONS: -Parent tray: there are two cup holders, but they are too small for the bike water bottles we use. Moreover, the tray itself is about 2lbs so it adds weight to the stroller. But again, it is great for parents that enjoy listening to music while running. -Folded stroller: when folded up the stroller is huge, but you can easily remove the front wheel. (About 23 x 37 without removing the front wheel.) No stroller is perfect. You may like or dislike some of them, so you just have to find the jogging stroller that is right for you at the right price. I am a runner and have put a ton of miles on it and know that it'll go a lot more. Due to the stationary front wheel, this is not a stroller for shopping, though; it's definitely for running. I didn't use the pedometer bc I have a Garmin, and I only used the speakers a few times but they worked great when I did. The front wheel pops off pretty easily so I can fit it in the trunk of my Accord or Civic. Before I bought this stroller, I researched a lot of different strollers and decided on this one. I would DEFINITELY buy it again and would recommend it to a friend. I put my 6wk old in it and have used it with her until now at 20 months. This is a GREAT buy! The 2002 Overland trim features even more upgraded equipment, including a 4.7-liter V8 engine, a tire pressure monitoring system and 17-inch aluminum wheels. Engine, Transmission and Fuel Economy The 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland came standard with a 4.7-liter 265-horsepower V8 engine and a five-speed automatic overdirve transmission. The engine produced 225 pound-feet of torque at 3,600 rpm and had a bore and stroke of 3.66 by 3.40 inches and a compression ratio of 9:7-1. It featured a 20.5-gallon gas tank and achieved a fuel economy of 13 mpg in the city and 18 mpg on the highway. The Jeep had a standard towing capability of 2,000 lbs., with a maximum of 6,500 lbs. Safety Features The Grand Cherokee Overland came standard with several safety features. These features included child safety door locks, power door locks, a vehicle anti-theft system, four-wheel drive, anti-lock brakes, locking differential, keyless entry and driver, passenger and side head curtain airbags. Interior The 2002 Overland came standard with seating for five, power windows, air conditioning, separate driver/front passenger climate controls, cruise control, tachometer, tilt steering, tilt steering column, leather steering wheel, steering wheel mounted controls, genuine wood trim and trip computer.The Jeep also included a power sunroof; driver and passenger multi-adjustable power seats; heated front seats; front seat lumbar support; power memory front seats; leather seats; a second-row folding seat; cargo cover; cargo tie-downs; and cargo net. The Jeep's audio system included a radio, cassette player, CD player and CD changer. Front seat passengers will find 39.7 inches of headroom, 41.4 inches of legroom, 58.9 inches of shoulder room and 56.5 inches of hip room. Backseat passengers will have slightly less space, with 39.5 inches of headroom, 35.3 inches of legroom, 57.8 inches of shoulder room and 52.4 inches of hip room. Exterior The four-door Grand Cherokee Overland measures 181.6 inches long, 72.6 inches wide and 70.3 inches tall, and weighs in at 4,364 lbs. It has a wheelbase of 105.9 inches, ground clearance of 8.3 inches and a turning diameter of 37.4 feet. Standard exterior features include automatic headlights, 17-inch machined aluminum wheels, fog lights, underbody protection, a full-size spare tire, electrochromic mirror, heated exterior mirrors, power adjustable exterior mirrors, tinted glass, interval wipers, rain sensing wipers, rear wiper and rear window defogger.
